Scots care! Serving dinner at the Old Brewery Mission

On Monday, members of the St. Andrew's Society Council and Community Assistance Committee visited the Old Brewery Mission and helped serve dinner to the mission's clients. This visit gave our members a chance to see firsthand the work of this important institution, and appreciate the vital role that the mission plays in our community. The St. Andrew's Society is proud to be a supporter!

Following our visit, we received the following letter:

On behalf of the men who have been touched by your generosity, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for your participation in the Old Brewery Mission Dinner Experience.

We are grateful for your time spent volunteering. We hope that this event gave you a better understanding of the challenges we collectively face in ending the cycle of homelessness.

Without the contribution of individuals like you, it would be impossible for the Mission to continue to support the people experiencing homelessness in Montreal who rely on us in their time of need.

The Experience a Dinner event is particularly beneficial to those who come for a meal—it shows them that society cares and that they are not forgotten. We encourage you to share your experience with your network to help reduce the stigma that homeless people often face.

Again, we thank you and your team members and hope to see you soon!

Best regards,

Lynne Dupuis

St. Andrew's Society wins trophy at the St. Patrick's Parade!

On Sunday, a group of fearless, hardy Scots—many of them with bare knees below their kilts!—braved the bitter cold and wind to march in the St. Patrick's Parade. Along with the Black Watch Association Pipes and Drums, who played their instruments with bare fingers in the cold, we marched proudly behind our banner while hoisting a sea of Scottish flags in the air.

We have just learned that our delegation has been awarded the Phillips & Campbell Trophy for Best Marching Unit! This trophy will be presented at the Post-Parade & Awards Banquet, hosted by the United Irish Societies, on April 1.

Our deepest thanks go out to all who took part in this effort, especially the Black Watch Association Pipes and Drums led by Drum Major Bob Labreche. We are grateful for your contribution—and sincerely hope that everyone's toes and fingers and ears have warmed up again!

On March 3, St. Andrew's Society President Guthrie Stewart (right) represented the Society at the St. Patrick's Charity Ball. We are pleased to reaffirm the enduring ties of friendship and kinship with our Irish brothers and sisters!

Meet a student in the educational aid program

The St. Andrew's Society has supported education throughout its history, and is proud to be able to provide financial assistance to qualified students. Many thanks to our members whose generosity makes this program possible. Scots care!

By Wellesley McDonald

I am 19 years old and currently in the first year of my undergraduate degree at Queen’s University. I am studying mining engineering with a specialty in mineral processing. I am particularly interested in the extraction of minerals and metals and how to better optimize the materials extracted. I decided on mining engineering because of the crazy characteristics that rocks and minerals have that we use in our everyday lives. Rocks have always been something I was fascinated by.

I am very much enjoying my first year at Queen’s. The engineering community is like nothing I have ever experienced before. The spirt, support and friendships that the school helps to create are extremely beneficial to the heavy workload of an engineering student. Next year I will be able to dive more into the community by being an orientation leader for the first-year engineering students, helping them adjust to their first week of university.

Thank you for all the support the St. Andrew’s Society of Montreal has given me to be able to better enjoy my time at Queen's University.

Reminder to St. Andrew's Society members: It's time to renew your annual membership! Only members in good standing will be able to participate in our Annual General Meeting which will take place on May 8. If you haven't already, please renew your membership today!
