The St. Andrew's Society plants a grove with Trees for Life

Inspired by Michael Yellowlees and his heroic cross-Canada quest to support reforestation of the Scottish Highlands, the Society has made a contribution to Trees for Life, enabling a grove of thirty trees to be planted as part of this effort.

Our trees, grown from locally collected seeds, will help to rewild the Caledonian Forest, a rich habitat found only in the Scottish Highlands. They will be planted alongside other young, native trees, transforming open hillsides into healthy young woodland, rich in wildlife such as red squirrel, black grouse, capercaillie, wood ants and twinflower. Once the trees reach maturity, natural regeneration will go on to create the wild forests of the future for generations to enjoy.

Trees for Life is also working to save some of Scotland’s precious native animals such as the Eurasian beaver. Beavers are incredible ecosystem engineers, creating nature-rich wetlands along Scotland’s rivers and waterways. Since 2020, Trees for Life has been lobbying the Scottish Government to better protect these incredible mammals—advocating a policy of translocation, rather than culling, in agricultural areas where beavers occasionally cause damage.

If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause by making a donation or adding a tree of your own to the St. Andrew's Society grove, visit our webpage on the Trees for Life website.

From our friends at the St. Andrew's Society of Toronto:

Online session: Scottish Influence in Early Toronto

This free online session will take place on May 5 at 8 p.m.—the 186th anniversary of the founding of the St. Andrew's Society of Toronto.

The presentation will examine how Scottish influence in early Toronto led to the founding of the Society. The legacy of William Allan, the Society's first president, will be discussed at length. Allan was born in Scotland and immigrated to North America when he was a teenager. Despite having little formal education, he went on to become Toronto's wealthiest citizen.

The impact of George Brown, William Lyon Mackenzie, and other famous Scots from the city's history will also be touched on. The past and the present of the Society will be reviewed as well as what our supporters can look forward to in coming months.

Information and registration

Applications now open for the St. Andrew's Society educational aid program

As part of the Society's mandate to provide assistance to Scots and their descendants in Quebec, we provide educational aid to qualified students by means of bursaries and scholarships. There are three criteria for receiving an educational bursary with the St. Andrew’s Society of Montreal: the student must be of Scottish birth or ancestry, must be in full-time attendance at a university or CEGEP, and must be a resident of Quebec. For more information and to submit an application, please visit our website. The deadline for the current round of applications is June 10!

Volunteer with the Montreal Highland Games!

The Montreal Highland Games is a family-friendly festival that invites Montrealers to immerse themselves in Scottish culture. This festival would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Each year we look forward to seeing old friends and welcoming new ones to our team!

After a two-year hiatus, the Games are returning to the grounds of the Douglas Hospital in Verdun on Sunday, July 31. We need your help on the day of the Games, and there are also volunteer opportunities on the preceding Friday and Saturday (setup) and the following Monday (takedown).

If you feel that this is a fun way for you to spend a day giving back to the community, learning about Scottish culture, and meeting new and amazing people, please signup today!

Note: If you are student requiring volunteer credit hours for your studies, we may be able to help you. Please contact our Volunteer Director Isabel Julian to inquire.

Join our team!

Reminder to St. Andrew's Society members: It's time to renew your annual membership! Only members in good standing will be able to participate in our Annual General Meeting which will take place on May 16. If you haven't already, please renew your membership today!
